BrajCare – helping you to serve Braj

Vrindavan is, perhaps, the most extraordinary place on the planet. Celebrated in the sacred scriptures, it has become home to thousands of sadhus, holy people who have dedicated their lives entirely to serving God. So many have a deep desire to offer some service to this sacred land and its inhabitants. To this end, Srila Sacinandana Swami established the BrajCare foundation.

“O sadhu, if you can't suddenly renounce this illusory world, then day and night meditate on Vrndavana. Worship Vrndavana's king and queen, always chant Their holy names, and always hear Their glories. With food, clothing, and other gifts, serve the residents of Vrndavana.”

Feeding Homeless Cows

The Vedic scriptures glorify the service of cows, and what could be better than serving the cows near Govardhan? Especially those who, for various reasons, are without shelter and care. For more than four years, our rickshaw, loaded with sacks of chopped grass, has followed its daily route from Govinda Kunda to Surabhi Kunda. The cows wait for us, and when they see the rickshaw, they start mooing joyfully and run toward it. Currently, we distribute about 400 kg of grass every day, but we plan to continue to increase this amount.

School for Children from Poor Families

In India, there is no free public education, and many families in Radha Kunda are so poor that they cannot afford to send their children to paid schools. About three years ago, we opened our own school, which we named the Sri Rupa Seva School. We rent a separate building with several classrooms, a small kitchen, and a yard for playing. We have wonderful teachers who hold classes in Hindi and English, teach the children to write and count, and give lessons on playing the mridanga. We provide the children with school uniforms, textbooks, and sometimes treat them to small gifts.

Distributing Warm Clothing

Vrindavan's winter is harsh, even though the temperature rarely falls below +2°C. The problem is that many Brajabasis live either on the streets or in huts where the temperature is the same as outside. To understand what it's like, imagine sleeping in a refrigerator, waking up in it, bathing, and eating in the same cold. Warm clothes are a necessity. Every year, we bring sweaters, socks, and hats and distribute them to those most in need. Sometimes we also purchase warm blankets and drive along the parikrama road at night, covering those who sleep outside.

Caring for Elderly Sadhus

Many saints have chosen Radha Kunda as the place of their bhajan, vowing never to leave its banks. They live in ascetic conditions in small kutirs, for which they must pay monthly rent. We help repair these kutirs, organize medical care, and provide small monthly donations to the sadhus so they can pay for their rent and electricity.

Cleaning Giriraj

Pilgrims who come to Govardhan are often shocked by the amount of trash on the parikrama road. "How can this be? How can a holy place be so dirty? Why isn’t anyone cleaning up?" Those familiar with Vrindavan know that much of the trash is left by pilgrims who come from all over India. But the fact remains – there is a lot of trash.

We have two choices: complain and look for someone to blame, or clean it up ourselves. During almost every retreat, we set aside time to join with other Vaishnavas and clean at least a small section at the foot of Giriraj from plastic and other waste. One person can collect a large bag of trash in an hour. Five people can fill five bags. Now imagine what a group of 50 or 100 people can accomplish!
